LETTERS
My dear Asher, You made adry, dyll subject (AARP Defensive Driving) entertaining and educational. Those attending enjoyed spending rime in you class. Your ability to engage all to get all to participate is remarkable. After working a full day, even though tired, Bernie and I had a grand time. I think students absorb more where there is some levity in the classroom. Your students are so fortunate. Thank you again and again for all your kindness to me, PPL patrons, and the community. Best regards to your loving wife Anna, I admire the relationship you both enjoy. Fondly, Gloria (Pomerantz), Director for Special Projects, Peninsula Public Library, Lawrence , NY
What a pleasant surprise, Asher, to find my note to you in your most recent issue of the bulletin! That was kind and generous of you and I most appreciate it, especially on the eve of our high holy days, so thank you very much. It's disheartening to see what's happening to the neighbors of our beloved Israel– –your open letter to the Greek/ Orthodox/American Community about Volos and general Greek society, amongst the goings on in Turkey and Egypt . When I see the deterioration of Egyptian-Israeli relations and the journalists claiming that that would not have happened under Mubarak, I want to yell out that had Mubarak encouraged a warm peace with Israel instead of the very cold peace he maintained, this upwelling of hatred by the Egyptians on the street for Israel might have been diminished had he really tried to improve relations. Their press like the press of the PA was, and continues to be, openly hostile to Israel . The fault lies with his administration and Islam's intractable hatred for us! And the Turkey you wrote about before the election has gotten worse since his overwhelming election. Erdogan's bellicose pronouncements sound war-like. If his naval vessels accompany the next flotilla, that would be a casus belli. Asher, I'm scared. I hope that the wish for L'Shana Tova materializes. Jack S., Los Angeles , CA

This letter was printed in The Wall Street Journal, 10-8-11, in response to a half page op-ed written by Fran Tarkenton about how teachers should be paid. He suggested that teachers be paid like football players; in other words, according to how many points their students score on tests rather than according to their level of experience (seniority).
I worked in education for over 40 years and can say with confidence that, with few exceptions, experience is still the most valued credential there is in education, as is the case in most other professions. Most people, if they had a better alternative, would not want to be the patient of a surgeon doing his first, second or third operation or the client of a lawyer who passed the bar yesterday. What Mr. Tarkenton fails to realize is that as a football player gets older his ability to do his job diminishes but just the opposite is generally the case for a teacher. Are experienced teachers worth twice what new ones are? Absolutely! Howard Brenner, Woodmere , NY
To the Editor: Nicholas D. Kristof says Israel should give Palestinians in the West Bank the vote because that is democracy. But let’s not forget Israeli democracy. The Israeli public elected Benjamin Netanyahu to be prime minister, and Mr. Netanyahu is simply trying to follow the will of the majority of Israelis, who do not want a dysfunctional terrorist state on their border.
