This letter was printed in The Wall Street Journal, 10-8-11, in response to a half page op-ed written by Fran Tarkenton about how teachers should be paid. He suggested that teachers be paid like football players; in other words, according to how many points their students score on tests rather than according to their level of experience (seniority).
I worked in education for over 40 years and can say with confidence that, with few exceptions, experience is still the most valued credential there is in education, as is the case in most other professions. Most people, if they had a better alternative, would not want to be the patient of a surgeon doing his first, second or third operation or the client of a lawyer who passed the bar yesterday. What Mr. Tarkenton fails to realize is that as a football player gets older his ability to do his job diminishes but just the opposite is generally the case for a teacher.
