                                                LETTERS
Bravo, Asher. You are keeping many people on their toes all over the world. You are like the Lions of Judah watching over our people and all the free nations around the world! Preparing for my classes I found a few pearls which you might use as filler in one of the pages of your Bulletin, on the concept of the Chosen People. An ancient poem (anonymous): How odd Of G-d To choose The Jews, But odder still Are those Who choose A Jewish G-d And spurn The Jews ... Mordecai Kaplan: Who said the 'chosen people'? We are the 'choosing people'! (one of the classical misunderstandings about Reconstructionism. R' L.A., Sun City West, AZ

Dear Prof. Matathias, Thank you so much for coming to Glen Cove High School to be interviewed by Anthony and Angelica. The students had a wonderful experience, and I hope you did as well. Moreover, I appreciate you taking time out of your life to work with my students, who have seen history come alive through meeting you. Your patience and warmth toward them is valued, and the students have expressed many times how they have grown attached to the experience and their time with you. We are working hard on the interviews to put together a finished mini-documentary about you and your story. When the students are finished, we hope to have you, and your family, come to a reception at the Holocaust Center to celebrate your story. There will be an invitation to that event to follow. Again, thank you for your time, and look forward to seeing you again soon. Sincerely, Caitlin Donovan, Teacher, Glen Cove High School

Dea Prof. Asher J. Matathias, We would like to thank you for the time you put aside to allow us to interview you. The experience you shared with us was one that will stick within us forever. Your stories have inspired us in so many ways. Even though you experienced everything at a young age, and the stories you told us were through the eyes of your parents, you are still a survivor in our eyes. We hope to see and talk to you soon! Sincerely, /s/ Angelica Morra, Anthony Famiglietti, Students, Glen Cove H.S.

Dear Asher, We enjoyed your talk, thanks for coming (Senior Center of Long Beach, Magnolia Boulevard), it was good seeing you. Enclosed find a $ … check, a donation to your Lodge. Irene L., Jewish Women International #508, Long Beach, NY

Dear Prof. Matathias,
Thank you, for the B'nai B'rith scholarship! It is an honor. I am sure that Judaism will remain an important part of who I am, as I am attending List College at Columbia University this fall. It is for a dual degree program with the Jewish Theological Seminary. Thank you, for recognizing me! לשלום Allison Schlissel, Valley Stream, NY

It occurs to me, Asher, that you may not know about my first novel, Heirs To The Pushcart Fortune, which is a fictionalized work about the immigrant experience––of a Sephardic who leaves Thessaloniki for the United States. The work lets the reader experience first hand why he wanted to leave, his trials and triumphs in America, Sephardic values such as kapara, Ladino expressions, and mention of some foods like roskas.  There are two letters in the novel from my cousin, Dr. Koen, from Kliniki Koen in Volos whom you, of course, know first hand --- or is it first gentle slap? Perhaps you and some of your friends might be interested in the work. It's available in both paper back and Kindle.  Please check out:  http://www.jacksalem.com/ Hope you're enjoying your summer vacation. Jack Salem, Los Angeles, CA

The Paradox of Our Times Forward by Elliot H. Goldberg
Today we have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees, but less common sense; more knowledge, but less judgment. We have more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness. We spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too often, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too little, and lie too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life; we have added years to life, but not life to years. We have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less. We buy more, but enjoy it less. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We've conquered outer space, but not our inner space. We've split the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less; plan more but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We have higher incomes, but lower morals. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies, but have less communication. We are long on quantity, but short on quality. These are the times of fast foods, and slow digestion; tall men and short character; steep profits and shallow relationships. More leisure and less fun; two incomes, but more divorce; fancier houses, but broken homes.
Let us propose, as of today, that we do not keep anything for a special occasion, because everyday that we live is a special occasion. Search for knowledge, read more, sit on your front porch and admire the view without paying attention to your needs. Spend more time with the family and friends, eat your favorite foods, and visit the places you love. Life is a chain of moments of enjoyment, not only about survival. Use the crystal goblets. Do not save your best perfume, and use it every time you feel you want it. Remove from your vocabulary phrases like "one of these days," and "someday." Let's write that letter we thought of writing "one of these days." Let's tell our families and friends how much we love them. Do not delay anything that adds laughter and joy to your life. Every day, every hour, and every minute is special!

B’nai B’rith Expresses Appreciation For Stance Of Greek Government Regarding Gaza Flotilla
In a letter to Greek Ambassador Vassilis Kaskarelis, B’nai B’rith International expressed gratitude for the Greek government’s decision to ban one of the Gaza-bound “freedom flotilla” ships from leaving Greek ports.
This decision was followed by Greek authorities’ detention of three activists after a ship set sail despite the government’s prohibition. B’nai B’rith International President Allan J. Jacobs and Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin wrote to the ambassador that, “Beginning with the Foreign Ministry’s statement last week, intended to discourage those engaged in this activity, and then with the firm statements and actions of your Homeland Security ministry and other agencies of the government, particularly the prevention of the boats from leaving port, Greece has underscored the destructive, and negative objectives of those seeking to ‘break the blockade’ of Gaza.” The letter continues: “Only with a return to negotiations, without preconditions, can the peace process hope to succeed. Diversions and provocations, such as those planned by the flotilla’s organizers, are surely not that path.” Bnai B’rith will continue to monitor the situation and speak out against those who seek to interfere with Israel’s right to defend itself.
